Monday Sun Devil Updates 1/16

Injuries

After a surprising win against Oregon State in basketball, the Sun Devils took another blow to their roster.

Junior Trent Lockett sprained his right ankle and at this point there is no timetable for his return. Lockett was thrusts into the point guard role after the sudden dismissal of Keala King four games ago. It has been a rough adjustment, but Lockett has been arguably their best player.

TV Time

If you’re looking for something to watch ASU-related this Monday night head over to Fox Sports Arizona. ASU defensive back Eddie Elder, linebacker Colin Parker, long snapper Cameron Kastl, and receiver Aaron Pflugrad will be playing in the Casino Del Sol College All-Star game at Kino Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.

Colin Parker led the team in tackling with 75 tackles. A free safety, Elder ranked fourth in tackles on the team with 66, had four pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble. Pflugrad was one of quarterback Brock Osweiler’s main receiving targets. He finished the season second in receiving yards with 665 and third in receptions with 44.

Happy Anniversary

It has been one month since Todd Graham left head coaching job at Pittsburgh and accepted the head coaching job at ASU. Some would say it’s a shocker has stayed around for this long.

The reaction to Graham’s hiring was lukewarm at best. ASU fans and media are still unsure of what he will bring and if Graham will be there for the long term. In an interview with Fox Sports Arizona, Graham said he will compete for the fans support and work to rally the community once recruiting ends February 1st.

“We’re going to put a product on that field that they can be proud of with character and class.” Graham said.

“I understand that they work hard for their money. I know that there’s been a lot of frustration, but I’m going to be doing what I call speaking victory. I believe there’s great power in what we speak out of our mouth. I’m asking them to join with me and be positive, and let’s work hard to get this thing going where it needs to be.”

Brock Osweiler Enters The Draft

Note: It has been a while since my last post. Sorry about that folks. We will be getting back into a regular schedule soon.

Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler has decided to forgo his last season of eligibility and enter the 2012 NFL Draft.

The rumors had been circling for several days that Osweiler would have a press conference to announce his departure. Instead, the school sent out a release this Friday afternoon detailing the news.

In his first year under center, Osweiler set school records in attempts (516), completions (326), and completion percentage (63.2) while throwing for 4,036 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Osweiler initially committed to Gonzaga for basketball, but the 6’8″ prospect decided to focus on football instead.

Osweiler is not considered a top prospect along the lines of Andrew Luck or Robert Griffen III, but he has shown some talent with his arm strength, impressive measurables (see 6’8″), and above average athleticism. Some good workouts and who knows how high he might shoot up.

Fiesta Bowl Preview: Stanford vs Oklahoma St.

Last year’s Fiesta Bowl was a complete snooze fest as we saw Oklahoma completely dominate a Connecticut team that came into the game with 4 losses. This year’s Fiesta Bowl has the makings to be the best bowl game of the season as the #3 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys take on the the #4 ranked Stanford Cardinal. This game will also feature two of college football’s most prolific offenses of the 2011 season.

Oklahoma State comes into this game with the second highest scoring offense in college football at 49.3 points per game. They are led by 28-year old QB Brandon Weeden. Weeden has thrown for over 4,300 yards this season with 34 TD passes. His main target is WR Justin Blackmon who caught 113 passes this past season and is one of the top pro prospects at WR for the 2012 draft. Joseph Randle is also dangerous in the backfield. Randle has over 1,100 yards rushing wth 23 TDs to his credit as well.

For Stanford to win this game they must try and outscore Oklahoma St. Oklahoma St will get their points. And even though Stanford does have the 5th best rush defense in the nation, they did give up big yardage to Oregon’s LaMichael James and USC’s Curtis McNeal.  So it would not surprise me if Joseph Randle has a big game as well. Plus both USC and Oregon managed to put up big points against Stanford. I see Oklahoma St having no problems as well.

Stanford needs a big game from RB Stepfan Taylor. Plus, Oklahoma St is giving 180 yards a game rushing which ranks 83rd in college football. Andrew Luck needs to step up as well in what is more than likely his last collegiate football game as many people have him going as the first pick in the NFL draft. But the key today for Stanford to win is Stepfan Taylor and trying to stop Oklahoma St.’s rushing attack.

Which Oklahoma St. team will Stanford face today as well. The one that completely destroyed both Baylor and Oklahoma or the Cowboys team that lost to Iowa St. and almost lost to Texas A&M as well. For the Cardinal’s sake they better hope they get the latter. But Oklahoma St. has showed up in big games this season and I expect them to show up in this one as well.
Final prediction: Oklahoma St. 49 Stanford 34

Alamo Bowl Light?

Oregon and Wisconsin both have incredible offenses but the winner of the Rose Bowl will be the team whose defense makes the most stops. I see a high scoring game that will likely make folks think of the battles between Michigan State and Wisconsin this year more than say last night’s Alamo Bowl. Look for Oregon to score quickly and Wisconsin to score on longer drives. The key question will be if Oregon’s defense is too winded to stop Wisconsin from scoring late in the game. I’d compare Wisconsin’s offense to a Stanford’s though with much better skill position players. Obviously Oregon blew out the Trees but the Ducks won’t have as large of a speed advantage and it should keep the game closer. The Badger’s QB Russell Wilson will have A class wideouts compared to the C level guys Stanford was throwing out there. Oregon will need to bring pressure on Wilson or he will pick apart the young Duck corners on play action as I see the Ducks attempting a lot of selling out to the run early. On the other side of the ball I think Wisconsin has some major questions defensively. They have a lot of size on defense but size isn’t the best defense against Oregon on the edges. The Badger linebackers will need to make tackles in space – if they don’t look for a bunch of explosion plays from LMJ, Kenjon Barner, Huff and DAT. If Oregon can score early and often Wisconsin will lose both the chance to have Ball kill clock and keep Oregon’s defense on the field for long sustained drives plus Wilson will not have the play action in his arsenal. He is deadly on play action just like Andrew Luck and the Ducks were able to shut him down for the most part as they forced him to throw almost every play in the final three quarters. Watch Oregon carefully there first few drives – is DT throwing accurate balls and are the wideouts making catches? If so this game could get ugly fast. If Oregon is not crisp and has a case of the drops like what happened against USC Wisconsin will be in the game all day and has a great chance to win if they can establish the run early. Oregon wins their first Rose Bowl since 1917 (is there a single Duck fan who remembers that game still alive?) by a score of 38 to 31.

UCLA picks up 5th commit in the Mora era

4 star CB Ishmael Adams out of Oaks Christian HS verbally committed to UCLA yesterday. This is Coach Mora’s 2nd 4 star cornerback commit since taking over the job 2 weeks ago.

The Daily News’ Jon Gold got a great interview.
JG: Halfway through your senior year, UCLA switches coaches on you – how did that affect your recruitment?
Adams: “My uncle has a great connection with Keyshawn Johnson, and he’s close with Jim Mora Jr.; he knew aout him,and gave my uncle some good feedback. Coach (Bill) Redell knew Jim Mora’s dad, and he’s known Jim since he was little. I got good information and feedback from Coach Redell, and those are people who really helped me make my decision. It wasn’t too big of a difference with the coaching staff – it was the players they have. I made connections. Those connections helped me make the decision, and they’re excited about building the program up and making changes and building a class now to help.”

JG: You are very active on Twitter discussing your recruitment, especially vocal with other uncommitted players; how has that kind of communication changed just in the few years of your recruitment?
Adams: “You really, truly want to have a great class. Those are the guys you’re playing with for four years. If you don’t feel comfortable with them now, how are you supposed to for four years? Making those bonds you make during trips, during the summer – those really help, especially if you make connections with top players. Bryce was always in my ear about going to Cal which had some influence. It really comes down to where a few players are going, and does that program also fit you? It’s really changed a lot even since the very beginning for me.”

UCLA’s “ALL TRANSFER TEAM”

Interesting statistics coming from Baxter Holmes of the La Times.

Trading places

It’s too soon to call Matt Carlino the next Jimmer Fredette at Brigham Young, but the former UCLA guard who transferred to BYU has given the Cougars a considerable scoring boost in his first two games.

Carlino scored 18 points against Baylor, then added 10 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds against Buffalo in his first collegiate start.

Carlino is one of several former UCLA players who is having a good season.

New Mexico senior forward Drew Gordon is averaging 11 points and a team-high 10.9 rebounds for the 9-2 Lobos.

(Gordon’s teammate, guard Kendall Williams, a onetime UCLA commit, is averaging 11.1 points.)

Nevada Las Vegas sophomore forward Mike Moser is averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 11.4 rebounds for the 12-2 Rebels, who are ranked No. 21.

And Moser’s teammate, Chace Stanback, another UCLA transfer, is averaging a team-high 14.5 points.

UCLA’s new recruiting pipeline to So Cal

Coach Mora admiringly does not have any experience on the recruiting trail. So what is a new head coach to do? Hire assistants that understand it and excel at it!

The Daily News’ Jon Gold wrote a nice piece on the first 2 coaches, Adrian Klemm and Steve Broussard that will fight tooth in nail for recruits.

Welcome Coach Jim L. Mora!

Good luck and hit that recruiting trail harder then Lewis & CLark hit the Oregon trail!

UCLA F Reeves Nelson suspended indefinitely

Don’t dare call it the “SI curse”. Don’t blame the Athletic Director or Head Coach Ben Howland. Blame this wacky, out of control young man who has yet to mature.

MAYBE, just maybe, you can blame the fact that the UCLA basketball team does not have a home court this season as Pauley Pavilion is being renovated. Maybe you can point to the fact that UCLa lost too many players to the NBA, ie, Tyler Honeycutt and Malcolm Lee. Maybe there are too many new faces on the court and Reeves isn’t getting his fair share of the ball.

But no 1 players is bigger then UCLA and I applaud Coach Ben Howland for being strict with this kid and not only giving him a second and third chance, but to suspend him even though he has the potential to be an All America player!

Sad day, but this should help the team move on and it will give other’s more playing time.
